Teacher Education Requirements

To make sure that you possess the knowledge, skills, and disposition required to become a successful teacher, you will be required to complete assessments throughout your teacher preparation program.

These assessments are divided into three transition points or gateways through which you pass as you prepare for certification:

  1. Gateway I: Admission to Professional Studies
  2. Gateway II: Admission to Student Teaching
  3. Gateway III: Exit from Student Teaching

All teacher education candidates are required to attend a Teacher Education Orientation Workshop to learn more about these requirements.

Additional fees required
As a teacher candidate, you are required to purchase an ePortfolio account, which is LiveText. A LiveText license currently costs $80 for five years. In addition, criminal background checks and Illinois Certification Testing requirements require fees.

Check your progress through the gateways

Check the status of your Teacher Education Requirements through your iCampus portal.

If you are student teaching, all Gateway II requirements must be met by:

  • July 15, if you are student teaching in the Fall semester
  • December 15, if you are student teaching in the Spring semester

About Teacher Education Requirements at Illinois State University

The Council for Teacher Education (CTE) at Illinois State University adopted a series of teacher education requirements often referred to as "The Teacher Education Performance-Based Assessment (PBA) System" for implementation during the Fall 2002. This collection of assessments and requirements were developed to ensure that all teacher candidates completing a teacher preparation program possess the knowledge, skills, and dispositions required for successful teaching careers. In addition, it ensures that Illinois State University teacher education programs meet the Illinois State Board of Education and national accreditation requirements.

These assessments are driven by institutional standards derived from the conceptual framework, Realizing the Democratic Ideal, and the Illinois Professional Teaching Standards. Assessment results allow for the monitoring of individual candidate progress and continual program evaluation.
