ITPS information for students

Satisfying competencies

ITPS competencies should be completed as you progress through the Illinois State teacher education requirements. For specific details related to when each competency will be fulfilled, download the teacher education requirements implementation grid (pdf).

You must take responsibility for meeting all requirements associated with your teacher education program. University faculty in relevant courses will make you aware of competency requirements and resources available. They will also direct you to examples of acceptable work that satisfy the requirements for demonstrating particular competencies.

ITPS competencies that are associated with particular courses may be integrated with class projects, but only ITPS criteria will be used to determine student compliance with ITPS standards. The decision to integrate competencies with class projects rests with each course instructor and/or teacher education program coordinator for each department.

Demonstrate competencies successfully

All competencies must be demonstrated successfully. Students who fail to demonstrate a required competency will be unable to proceed through the specific gateway, allowing progression through the program. Students who have otherwise failed to demonstrate a competency associated with a course taken at Illinois State need to contact their course instructors.

If you are a transfer student who has not yet demonstrated a required ITPS competency associated with a course for which you have transfer credit, please contact the Teacher Education Center.

Check your status

The Education Center will collect information of successfully demonstrated competencies from appropriate sources and enter it into the your records. You may check the status of your individual competency performances through your electronic portfolio. Official university records of your status relative to the gateways may be accessed through your iCampus "My Info" page.

Disability concern

If you have a disability that makes demonstration of these competencies difficult, every effort will be made to accommodate your special needs. Please contact the Office of Disability Concerns for assistance.
