Instructional Technology Passport System (ITPS)

ITPS H. Assistive Technology

You will pass an online examination dealing with questions of technology as related to students with disabilities. You will also demonstrate competency with a set of identified assistive technology devices/software, including the following:

  • assistive technology devices and services
  • issues, barriers, and benefits of assistive technology
  • federal legislation for identifying and using assistive technology
  • high and low assistive technology devices
  • various input and output devices
  • ways to arrange the setting to facilitate the use of assistive technology
  • funding sources to support the use of assistive technology
  • professionals who can support the use of assistive technology
  • roles of teachers in the selection, implementation and evaluation of assistive technology for student with disabilities

Following an orientation, you will take an orientation test which must be passed at the 95% level in order to gain access to the next phase of hands-on experience at the SEAT Center. Experiences consist of working with different pieces of assistive technology to support the topics mentioned above as well as:

  • use of built-in accessibility features in Windows and Macintosh operating systems
  • conversion of standard print materials to digitalized text and subsequent use of a screen reader to read the digitalized text
  • correct and appropriate use of the close-captioning and text features included with most TV systems
  • correct and appropriate use of a TDD system

Assessment

Submission format

The teacher candidate will complete an orientation test and technology demonstration at the SEAT Center. Appropriate materials must be submitted in your electronic portfolio.

Passing Criterion

95% level of performance on orientation test; 100% level of performance on competency test.
