ITPS G. Desktop Publishing

To demonstrate this competency, you are required to create a document using a desktop publishing tool (such as Microsoft Word, Microsoft Publisher, Print Shop, or PageMaker), which is designed to be used in an educational setting. The document can be designed as a communication between home and school, or for instructional purposes. The document must include multiple columns, articles, headlines, subheadings, and graphics. There should be at least one example of text flowing around a graphic. The document should be easy to read, visually pleasing, and free of grammatical and spelling errors. You must write a rationale for how this document would be used for an appropriate educational purpose

The informational newsletter/flyer/brochure should contain the following elements:

  • a title for the informational newsletter/flyer/brochure headlines for all information or articles
  • at least three (3) original short articles or paragraphs
  • use of text boxes or columns to write articles or paragraphs
  • at least one image with associated text
  • use of a border either around the newsletter/flyer/brochure or around an article

The course instructor will provide basic orientation, but students are responsible for learning the required skills using available resources. Microsoft Word tutorials are available from BayCon Group. University computer labs provide hardware, software, and access to online resources.

Submission format

Hard copy of publication must be submitted to the course instructor based on instructor's specifications. In addition, the student must submit in their electronic portfolio a rationale stating how this document would be used for an appropriate educational purpose.
