ITPS B. Web Searching

You will demonstrate your knowledge of online searching tasks via an online exam.

Information to understand

The I-Search tutorial constitutes the necessary preparation for completing the online searching test. I-Search is comprised of six modules, each approximately 15-20 minutes in length. All of the modules include a list of key concepts and skills you should learn, an explanation of those concepts and skills, and a quiz. You must pass the quizzes at the end of each module if you plan on passing the ITPS B Quiz. (Please note that the quizzes associated with the I-Search tutorial do not constitute the Web Searching test.)

You may augment your ability to conduct online searches on the World Wide Web by studying tips from Google.

You should be able to:

  • identify the differences between (and the reason for choosing) a library online database versus a Web search engine
  • demonstrate how to analyze a search query by breaking it down into concepts
  • distinguish the difference between keyword and controlled vocabulary searches
  • demonstrate the ability to identify appropriate subject headings where applicable
  • review search results for relevancy to the search query and interpret data elements in individual records retrieved
  • identify at least three criteria for evaluating information resources
  • identify differences between popular and scholarly information resources
  • distinguish between citations for books, book chapters, and articles
