University Supervisors

University supervisors play a very important role in preparing teacher education candidates.  They act as the intermediary between the university and the host school to ensure the best environment for practice teaching.

University supervisors generally meet with the teacher candidate and the cooperating teacher prior to the student teaching experience. During this meeting, all three participants work out the plan for the student teaching semester. The university supervisor will provide information about the requirements and standards that must be met throughout the experience.

Typically, the university supervisor observes the student teacher every other week throughout the experience. Each observation includes a pre-conference, an in-class observation, and a post-conference. The university supervisor will work with the cooperating teacher to assign a midterm and a final grade for the experience. Should problems arise during student teaching, the university supervisor will attempt to mediate the situation to determine the best resolution for the student and the school. University supervisors are integral to the success of Illinois State University's teacher education programs!
