University High School Observation Request Form (pdf)

Consequences of inappropriate behavior when observing in schools

As a future teacher, we expect that you will behave professionally during your observations.

If for some reason you behave inappropriately, the classroom teacher will document it. In addition, if you arrive at your observation site dressed inappropriately, you will be sent home.

The school will notify the Lauby Center of your inappropriate behavior or dress, and you will not receive credit for the observation hour(s). Repeat offenders will not be allowed to observe in that school again.

Clinical Experiences for Special Education Majors

Clinical Experiences for Low Vision/Blindness (LVB)

All of the following clinical experiences must be preceded by required coursework and accompanied with a valid TB test and criminal background check.

Practicum

You will begin your first supervised clinical experience during SED 245.04: Field Work in Special Education for Low Vision/Blindness. You will be assigned a practicum placement within a one hour commute (up to 1.5 hours for all-day placements) of campus for one semester. You will be in your placements two days per week/half days or 1 day per week for all-day placement and will teach based on your cooperating teacher's plans.

Field Based Experience

Following your practicum semester, you will participate in a Field Based placement in either the Springfield area and the Illinois School for the Visual Impaired or the Indianapolis area and the Indiana School for the Blind. These geographical locations are assigned to you by the Department of Special Education approximately two months in advance. You will have two seven-week placements and will spend one week in the Chicago area. You will reside at the residential schools during your placement.
