Consequences of inappropriate behavior when observing in schools

As a future teacher, we expect that you will behave professionally during your observations.

If for some reason you behave inappropriately, the classroom teacher will document it. In addition, if you arrive at your observation site dressed inappropriately, you will be sent home.

The school will notify the Lauby Center of your inappropriate behavior or dress, and you will not receive credit for the observation hour(s). Repeat offenders will not be allowed to observe in that school again.

Clinical Experiences for Secondary and K-12 Majors Majors

As teacher education candidates, you will take education content and method courses that require clinical experiences. Clinical experiences occur in a variety of educational settings such as public schools, University Laboratory Schools, agencies, and other approved non-school settings. Clinical experiences are comprised of many pursuits, including, but not limited to: observation, tutoring/one-on-one contact, non-instructional assisting, small group instruction, whole class instruction, work with clinical clients, professional meetings, and other approved education related practice experiences for Illinois State students who want to be teachers. Clinical experiences are connected to coursework through learning activities such as reflection and analysis, with one overall purpose of linking theory to practice, including knowledge, skill, and disposition development.

The number of clinical experience hours and expected activity associated with each course can be found with the appropriate course description in the Undergraduate Catalog, as well as in the course syllabus provided by the instructor. You are required to complete a minimum of 100 pre-student teaching clinical experience hours prior to the student teaching experience. Fifty of those 100 clinical experience hours must be with diverse learners.

For most courses, program coordinators and course instructors determine where, when, and how clinical requirements will be met. The Lauby Teacher Education Center coordinates placements for certain major clinical experiences. Clinical placement information is communicated to you through the course instructor, the program coordinator, and/or the Lauby Center. You will provide your own transportation to clinical experience sites. Additionally, you must document clinical experiences in collaboration with course instructors and the Lauby Teacher Education Center.
