Cooperating teachers play a vital role in the preparation of their future colleagues. They help to transition teacher candidates from students to professional adults. To be a cooperating teacher, Illinois State University prefers that interested individuals hold a master’s degree, have at least three years of successful teaching experience, be recognized as a superior teacher in his/her own school system, and maintain certification in the major content area in which the teacher candidate will teach.
As a mentor, cooperating teachers are encouraged to hold regular meetings with their student teachers to provide consistent feedback. In addition, the cooperating teacher and the university supervisor will work together to determine both a mid-term and a final semester grade.
At Illinois State University, we greatly value the expertise of these master teachers and recognize their considerable role in forming the next generation of educational professionals.
